Self Marketing Advantage (SMA) offers workshops and one-on-one coaching designed specifically for students as well as business professionals.

SMA prepares you for unfamiliar situations you will face as you enter college and/or the working world. By providing guidance and practice, SMA helps you develop skills, overcome nervousness, build confidence and enable you to present your best self. Simply graduating from college or graduate school will not guarantee you’ll land a full-time job or gain admission to the graduate program of your choice. More people are going to college than ever before, so competition has increased significantly over the past 20 years. SMA helps you develop a plan to build your resume, and increase your chances of reaching your goal upon graduation. This service is designed for students who are in their early years of college with the goal of helping position you to make you attractive to employers (or graduate school admissions officers) upon graduation.

You've looked for a resume template, but you're still not sure which one to use, what information to include, and/or you don't have enough information to fill one page. SMA works with you to create an informative resume that is formatted appropriately.

You only get one chance at making a first impression, but do you know how to make it a positive one? SMA shows you the do's and don'ts of conducting yourself on interviews. This session equips you with the basics to help you succeed in various situations in your lifetime.

SMA gives you the competitive advantage by coaching you on what to expect in all areas of the interview process ranging from interviews to the current practices used in hiring; addressing your individual career objectives, and building your confidence. SMA helps you prepare for every step of the job-seeking process to present your best self on paper and the Internet, via phone, and in-person.

WORKSHOPS: SMA offers workshops to groups of eight or more people. They are 1-1.5 hours in length and the topics are customized based on the needs of the group. Workshops are interactive and include current information on the market. Examples of topics include:

  • What happens to your resume after you apply on-line and what to do to make yours be noticed in a good way
  • What you should be doing while you wait for the right opportunity to open up
  • What you can do to make a successful transition to another industry or another role
  • Where the jobs are and how to get them
  • All job-seeking advice is not universal – how to determine what’s appropriate for your situation

ONE-ON-ONE COACHING: SMA offers one-on-one services for job seekers who want to positively market themselves to prospective employers. If you need help or guidance on something other than the topics listed below, I offer open counseling to discuss the topic(s) of your choice.

You think your resume is good and you've had a parent or co-worker look at it, but you're not getting any responses. Whether you are an experienced professional in search of a job change or a college student seeking an internship, SMA will work with you to write a resume that will get noticed by potential employers.

With the rising costs of fuel and to save time, many companies are now using phone interviews to gather information about candidates before moving on to in-person meetings. Because the impression you leave during this screening process is based 100% on the sound of your voice and what you say, SMA will coach you on how to present yourself and build a positive rapport with the interviewer while only using your voice.

Sometimes your job search will require you to meet face-to-face with potential employers at multiple events: job fairs, networking events, informational interviews, job interviews in an office or over a meal, etc. In some situations you may not be the only person vying for the attention of the potential employer. SMA can guide you through the do's and don'ts of interviewing and coach you on how to successfully navigate your way through these types of events.

How you present yourself includes your personal appearance. You should not assume a business suit is an appropriate choice for all interviews or events. There are several factors to consider when selecting what to wear when meeting a potential employer. SMA will help you select an outfit that is flattering and appropriate for your job search without breaking your budget.
